We arrived home yesterday and had a grand time at my uncle's birthday party. One of the gifts he received from his children was all of th 16mm films converted to DVD. We watched them Saturday evening and had many rounds of laughter. Good for the soul.
The other gift was of a quilt that one of the daughters had created with all the sayings they remember growing up with. You know how we all have those in our families? One of them at our house was "Don't take any wooden nickels". Another was "To thine own self be true". Another - A wet bird never flies at night.
We laughed over the ones that were on the quilt. Uncle got choked up and couldn't read them. His kids read them for all of us. Priceless.
I'll try and post the picture of the quilt tomorrow. What expressions to you remember growing up in your household?
Well, one from my mom was, "grow where you're planted." :)
"You can spit in one hand and wish in the other..."
from my dad, "What did the monkey say when he got his tail ran over by a lawn mower? 'It won't be long now!'"

"Lie down with dogs, get up with fleas." That one traveled through a few generations in my family. Oh, and when my mom was really mad she'd say under her breath "Go to hell in a handbasket!" And I would giggle and giggle.

My mom always chided me with "Chairs are for people, not for things"
And my dad, who was a crusty old soul, had lots, including: "The grass is brown on both sides of the fence"; "Cheer up, things could be worse. So I cheered up and, sure enough, things got worse"; and "There is a light at the end of the tunnel. Most likely from a train headed straight for you."

Iris, my dad used to say that lawn mower/monkey joke! I forgot about that one!
Presbyterian Gal - I need that expression your mom said!
Redhead, I say that expression when things have gone awry!

My dad used to always say, "Lord love a duck..." Anytime I hear someone else say it, I have to double-take...

Mama I remeber you saying "I hear the pitter patter of little feet" "that's the pot calling the kettle black" and my favorite was the way you use to wake us up "toot too oOoT time to wake up! Can't hang around this station all day! This train has a lot of track to cover" "Toot too oOot" :o) and Will tells me everyday before I go to work "Don't take any wooden nickles"
