Antique - Photo Hunters
My grandparents liked to go "junkin" to various thrift shops, garage sales, flea market, and any place they might find a deal on an antique. My grandmother was notorious for a habit that I am inclined to brag about. I can hear it now...
"Grandmama, I like that necklace."
Grandmama replies, "10 cents at a garage sale."
By that exchange, I knew she was proud of the bargain she had found. To this day, if I remark on a necklace, pin, bracelet, I secretly wish the person would tell me a story about it, share the history of its origin. So many folks just say.. well, thank you.
This above photograph is a picture of a Victrola my grandparents found in a Goodwill, perhaps in the sixties. I remember hearing the adult conversation of how the folks there didn't know what they had and once they had sold it, tried to tell Granddad that it was a mistake they sold it for that amount. But Granddaddy had the receipt in his hand and a sale is a sale.
The Victrola still works to this day. Wind it up and it plays the 78. Volume control is by opening and closing the cabinet on the bottom. Length of playing time... well... you might get 3 or 4 minutes to a side. Really not long enough to even sit down.

Wow, that is a great antique piece. I'd like to have it - and the fact it still plays speaks wonders! =)

That is so great!
An older man who comes to help with reading at the school as a surrogate grandparent was telling me last night that his friend has a 180 year old till. (cash register) He was thinking of bringing it in to show the students and I am looking forward to it.
It's funny how now that I'm older, I am more interested in subjects such as history and geography compared to when I was still a student.

I love the idea of listening to old 78s on an antique record player. It seems so civilised somehow. Sometimes I think I was born in the wrong era. My mind sure is antique :)

Cool! My parents used to have lots of 78's...we melted them and used them fo craft projects.

Welcome to the hunt.
This is the second one I've seen on here. My brother bought one, but I know he must have paid more than your grandparents. I checked the serial numbers with the site and his model was made between 1914- 1916.

Now that's what I call an antique. I'd personally love to have one! : )
